The Gift of Music: Why "Someday" Should Start Today

As we welcome August, I always find myself thinking about the families who choose to make music part of their lives. Between school, work, sports, homework, and everything else on the calendar, I know adding one more activity isn't always easy. That's why I want to simply say... thank you.

Whether your child is already taking lessons or you're just beginning to think about it, you're considering something that will last far beyond childhood.

In more than 30 years of teaching, I've never met an adult who said, "I'm so glad I quit music lessons." What I hear instead is, "I wish I had stuck with it." That's because music isn't just another after-school activity—it becomes part of life's biggest memories.

Think about it... where don't we have music?

We hear it at birthday parties, weddings, graduations, church, sporting events, holiday gatherings, movies, road trips, and family celebrations. It comforts us during difficult times and gives us something to celebrate during the joyful ones. Music has a way of connecting people unlike anything else.

When a child learns an instrument, they're gaining so much more than musical notes. They're developing confidence, patience, creativity, discipline, perseverance, and the joy that comes from accomplishing something they once thought was impossible. Those life skills carry into school, careers, relationships, and beyond.

And adults—it's never too late! Some of our favorite students are adults finally fulfilling a dream they've carried for years. They often tell us their only regret is not starting sooner.
